TMD, or TMJ, is known as temporomandibular disorder. This is not an uncommon oral disorder. Every person has two temporomandibular joints. This joint is where your jaw connects to the side of your head. It has a small cartilage disc located in front of your ear that stops your jawbone from rubbing against the bones in your head. When functioning properly, you are able to speak, yawn and chew without any problems.
There are several reasons you may develop symptoms of TMD. Some of these include an injury to the joint, misaligned teeth, grinding of the teeth, arthritis and problems with the muscles or discs of the temporomandibular joint. Symptoms of TMD may include aching around your ear, facial pain, trouble chewing, a clicking sound when your mouth opens or closes and the jaw may lock open or shut.
Your symptoms may get worse over time, so it is important to get a proper diagnosis for this common oral disorder. There are various general dental treatment options available depending on the stage of your TMD.
At Atlantic Dentistry, we can get you an appointment with our convenient scheduling system and have you back on track in no time. Our dentist will be able to give you a proper diagnosis by ordering x-rays which will help determine if there are any underlying problems. Together, you will discuss a treatment plan. Treatment can include stretching exercises for the jaw muscles, dietary changes, wearing a night guard in your mouth and non-prescription pain relievers. In more extreme cases, surgery may be the solution.
If you have tenderness or persistent pain in your jaw, it could be TMD. We can discuss treatment options and help you get relief from this condition. Contact our office today and let Atlantic Dentistry get you back on track with your oral health.
