Gold vs. Porcelain crowns

Posted on 7/4/2022 by Atlantic Dentistry
Gold vs. Porcelain crownsDental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that offer restoration of missing teeth and improve aestheticism. Once you have paid a visit to our offices, our dentists will analyze your case and advise accordingly. The possible major causes of getting a dental crown include a weakened tooth after a cavity or severe decay, the need to replace a large filling, or even a damaged or cracked natural tooth.

When the dentist tells you that a dental crown is needed to solve your problem, the first thing that rings in your mind is the type of crowns to get. Well, we got you here as we've covered the two major types of dental crowns.

Gold Crowns

These dental crowns are made from copper and other metals such as chromium. While their strength and durability have made them massively famous, their color and aesthetics are drawbacks to their use.

The major advantage is their strength and resistance hence longer lifespan when taken good care of. Additionally, gold crowns tend to wear out quite slowly, just like natural enamel, and are ideal for posterior restorations.

Their shortcomings include their poor aestheticism, which doesn't resemble natural teeth. Unfortunately, to some patients, gold crowns bring forth allergic reactions as side effects.

Porcelain Crowns

These dental crowns are entirely made of porcelain materials and are the most popularly used crowns. The main advantages include their complete resemblance to the natural teeth in size, shape, and color. Furthermore, they are made from biocompatible materials and hence are toxic-free and do not pose allergic reactions to patients. Porcelain crowns are best suited for front teeth restorations as they improve one's aestheticism.

However, they have a shorter lifespan than metal crowns, calling for careful maintenance. Furthermore, patients with bruxism conditions are advised against using porcelain crowns.

At our offices, we offer the two aforementioned types of dental crowns and other types. Contact our offices and schedule your consultation with us for more information.
