HOW DOES TEETH WHITENING WORK?

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?Teeth whitening is the most popular cosmetic dental procedure. At Atlantic Dentistry,Dr. Sebastien Murphy and Dr. Murphy perform teeth whitening procedures to give you instantly brightened teeth.

There are two types of tooth whitening procedures: bleaching and non-bleaching, you can opt for.

Bleaching Procedure

At Atlantic Dentistry, we use professional whitening solutions that contain an active bleaching agent, either hydrogen carbamide or hydrogen peroxide. These active ingredients are used in a concentration anywhere from 10 to 22 percent and they can help break down stain molecules and make your teeth appear whiter.

Depending on the extent and severity of stains and the procedure used to whiten your teeth, a single session can brighten your teeth from five to eight shades.

•  Light-activated whitening: This teeth whitening procedure involves the use of heat and light with hydrogen peroxide, which can give you dramatic results. When the light is shone on the whitening gel applied to your teeth, it will cause a reaction that will whiten your teeth.
•  Bleaching mouthpiece: We may also provide you with a custom-fitted bleaching mouthpiece to whiten your teeth at home. Depending on the state of your teeth, we may prescribe how many hours you need to wear these trays and for how long. Make sure you do not wear the bleaching mouthpiece for a very long time as it can damage the enamel.

Non-Bleaching Procedure

We also perform non-bleaching procedures that can help you remove teeth stains by physical and chemical action. For example, we may use toothpaste with granules to polish your teeth that can remove surface stains caused by tobacco and certain types of food.

Teeth whitening is one of the most cost-effective, straightforward and non-invasive dental treatment to improve the appearance of your smile. However, it is not permanent and if you smoke or eat dark-pigmented food, your teeth will start to stain again.

In addition, teeth whitening may not be an effective treatment for all types of stains. People with intrinsic stains or grey teeth may be recommended other procedures like bonding or veneers to hide the discoloration.
